A new tax tool has appeared! We created a simple tax calculator for our website, available here ».
The goal behind the calculator was to provide a quick estimating tool for tax purposes. This calculator is designed for Alberta residents (or taxpayers) only, so if you live in another Canadian province you might want to check out the other recommended calculators down at the bottom of the page ».
For Best Results
We recommend following these guidelines:
- Canadian / Albertan taxpayers only
- Use whole numbers and round to the closest figure (no decimals)
- Employment Income:
- Include all earnings from regular employment
- For example, the dollar value from box 14 from your T4(s)
- Self-Employment Income:
- Include all earnings from self-employment
- Examples of this would be if you work as a contractor who bills clients for work (ie. graphic design, bookkeeping), you perform gig-based work (ie. Uber, Skip The Dishes), or you have a hobby or some other kind of project that earns you an income (ie. art, music, crafts). If you sell things you make, this is the place!
- Other Income:
- Include all other earnings that don’t fit under employment or self-employment
- For example, dividend or royalty payments listed from a T5 slip
- Taxes Paid:
- Include all taxes already paid or accounted for
- For example, the dollar value from boxes 16 (CPP), 16A (CPP2), 18 (EI), 22 (Income Tax) from your T4(s)
- Deductions:
- Include all deductions for the tax year
- Examples of this would be employment expenses, medical expenses, moving expenses, RRSP contributions, pension adjustments, union dues
- The calculator automatically includes the basic personal amounts for both provincial and federal taxes when making tax calculations (the first line from your TD1 / TD1AB forms)
Other Tax Calculators
As with all tools, it’s a good practice to check your work and confirm that the output lines up with other tools or estimation methods. Some external tax calculators we recommend:
If you’re located outside of Alberta, the tax calculators above will still be able to help you if you select the appropriate province for the calculations.
